ABOUT US

Who We Are: Faith, Heritage, and Community Service

A Cornerstone of the Community

The Ghanaian Presbyterian Church of Montreal is a registered charitable organization (Registration No: 894967306 RR 0001) dedicated to serving the spiritual, social, and emotional needs of the Greater Montreal and Laval areas. Established within the historic Reformed tradition, we operate not merely as a place of worship, but as a vital community hub where culture is celebrated, faith is nurtured, and newcomers to Canada find a supportive family.

While we are proud of our distinct Ghanaian heritage, our doors are open to people of all backgrounds. We believe that a church should be a “city set on a hill”—visible, accessible, and actively contributing to the welfare of the society in which it is planted.

Our History: A Journey of Resilience

Our story began in the late 1980s, born out of a desire for connection. A small group of Ghanaian immigrants, seeking to worship God in their mother tongue and support one another through the challenges of settlement, started meeting for prayer in living rooms. As the community grew, so did the vision.

Recognizing the need for structured governance and spiritual oversight, the congregation affiliated with the Presbyterian Church in Canada (PCC). This partnership allowed us to blend the vibrant, rhythmic worship of our African roots with the orderly, biblical governance of the Presbyterian tradition. For many years, we were a mobile church, renting halls across Montreal. However, through the sacrificial giving of our members and prudent financial stewardship, we achieved a historic milestone: the acquisition of our permanent center at 3000 Boul Sainte-Rose, Laval. Today, this building stands as a testament to our perseverance and a permanent resource for the community.

Mission and Vision

Our Mission: To proclaim the Gospel of Jesus Christ while providing a holistic support system for our members and the community. We aim to bridge the gap between cultural heritage and Canadian life, offering pastoral care, youth mentorship, and charitable outreach that transforms lives.

Our Vision: To be a vibrant, multi-generational congregation that empowers individuals to become compassionate leaders. We envision a community where the elderly are honored, the youth are equipped for the future, and every immigrant family feels fully integrated and supported.

Governance and Transparency

As a registered charity, we adhere to high standards of accountability and transparency. Our organization is governed by:

  • The Session: Composed of the Minister and ordained Elders, responsible for the spiritual direction and pastoral care of the congregation.
  • The Board of Managers: A dedicated committee responsible for the financial administration, building maintenance, and legal compliance of the charity.
  • The Presbytery: We are accountable to the Presbytery of Montreal, ensuring that our practices align with national standards of ethics and theology.

Why We Exist

We exist to serve. Whether through our Sunday School programs that teach ethics to children, our Women’s Fellowship that supports the bereaved, or our Men’s Fellowship that encourages responsible fatherhood, every aspect of our organization is designed to build a stronger, healthier society. We invite you to learn more about our work and join us in making a difference.
